Territory

Our fields are located in the territory of Giugliano in Campania, more precisely between the province of Naples and Caserta, close to unique ecosystems in the world.

Oasis of Variconi

The Variconi reserve is located on the left bank of the mouth of the Volturno River, a short distance from the historic center of the Municipality of Castelvolturno, it is a marshy area of high importance because it is located in the center of the Mediterranean. Being one of the last wetlands in Italy, it has been identified and protected by the Ramsar Convention *, and has become an ideal bridge to the African continent for the thousands of birds that, twice a year, move en masse making spectacular migrations. . The oasis includes a vast brackish environment behind the dunes, has an area of approximately 194 hectares of which 60% is occupied by two small coastal ponds communicating with each other. The ponds do not have a direct and constant relationship with the sea, but there are canals which, in addition to connecting them, connect them to the mouth of the Volturno. The waters are brackish, they derive in part from infiltrations of marine origin and in part from meteoric contributions. The oasis is also an SPA, a Special Protection Area, due to the high number of migratory birds passing through it, about 250 species of birds have been observed there by ornithologists and many of them have chosen this area as their own area of nesting. In 1978 the Province of Caserta established an Oasis for the protection of fauna, while in 1993 the whole area became part of the Foce Volturno and Costa di Licola nature reserve of the Campania Region. Starting from the end of summer throughout the autumn, migratory birds travel along genetically controlled routes, which lead them partly to overwinter in Mediterranean habitats and partly to cross the Sahara, to arrive in the wintering areas located in equatorial Africa. . But already in February and throughout the spring the return to the areas of unification begins. In the humid areas of the Varicones are concentrated both the species that spend the entire winter period, both the species that follow the Tyrrhenian route during migrations, and the species that have chosen it as their nesting area. Walking in the reserve is a unique emotion, there is a birdwatching nature trail with walkways and huts for bird watching. The route was built in 2004.

Patria Lake

Lake Patria or Lake Patria is the largest coastal lake in Campania, with an area of 2 km². It is located in the municipality of Giugliano in Campania, in the hamlet called Lago Patria, in the province of Naples, and partly in the municipality of Castel Volturno, in the province of Caserta. It is the southernmost of the Pontine lakes. In ancient times, especially before the seventeenth-century hydraulic works, it extended more towards the north, with a large marshy area. In fact, the Clanis, which in ancient times flowed into Lake Patria, was artificially regulated and led to flow 9 km further north, in Pinetamare. Today it is fed by modest freshwater streams and some springs, but also by a canal, now concreted, which connects it to the sea and allows the entry of salt water. The surface is located about 4 m above sea level. Lago di Patria can be considered a coastal lake due to its position close to the sea, the modest depth (on average 1.5 m) and the salinity of the water. Lake Patria is home to a rich fauna of marsh birds and the fish fauna is also very diverse. Since 1999 it has been part of the Foce Volturno - Costa di Licola nature reserve, a regional protected area that merged and expanded previous protected areas.
